GAME MODES
Carol Vorderman's Sudoku introduces brand-new game modes that appeal to Sudoku players of all levels! Try them all, and work your way to becoming a true Sudoku Master!
Classic: Original Sudoku at it's very best!
- Aim of the game: Complete the puzzle in the quickest time!
- A puzzle and timer is displayed, complete the puzzle as quickly as possible.
- The automatic timer keeps check of the time taken.
- The more difficult puzzles the player completes, the higher points totaled.
- When the player completes a puzzle, another one is generated.
- All statistics will be saved and stored as part of the high-score table
for every player profile.
- Classic Sudoku comes in 4 difficulty levels:
- Easy
- Medium
- Difficult
- Super-Difficult
Career: Earn your Sudoku Black Belt, and the right to Challenge Carol.
- Aim of the game: To complete a series of puzzle challenges with each puzzle
having a specified time limit. As the grades increase, the puzzles will get
more difficult, and the time limits will get shorter.
- There are 8 different levels of challenges and grading:
- White Belt
- Yellow Belt
- Orange Belt
- Green Belt
- Blue Belt
- Brown Belt
- Black Belt
- Master
- At first, only the White Belt Challenge is available. Completing each
stage makes the next stage available.
- Each belt consists of a series of puzzles with time limits. As each puzzle
is presented, the time limit for that puzzle is also displayed, and begins
to count down.
- If the player completes every puzzle correctly in the allocated time,
they earn the belt, and are rewarded with a congratulations message from
Carol. The next challenge (belt) is made available.
- The challenges increase in difficulty (both in terms of the puzzle difficulty,
and the time allocated to complete them).
- To become a “Sudoku Master”, the player must gain a Black
Belt, and then challenge and beat Carol.
Challenge Carol: Can you beat the best and become a Sudoku Master?
- Aim of the game: Challenge and beat Carol in a series of puzzle challenges.
- Once the player challenges Carol, they are presented with one of four
challenges:
- 1st Dan
- 2nd Dan
- 3rd Dan
- 4th Dan
- Each Dan consists of a series of puzzles that need to be completed in
a specific time.
- For each puzzle, the timer shows the exact minutes and seconds quoted
as Carol’s time to beat and begins to count down. This time becomes
the “target time” for the player to beat.
- The player has to try and complete the puzzle before Carol’s time
reaches zero.
- However, only by beating Carol in all four challenges, and attaining black
belt within Career Mode, will the player be given the ultimate accolade
of “Sudoku Master”.
Arcade Modes
- Beat the Clock
- Aim of the game: Complete the puzzle before the time runs out.
- When you start the puzzle, you are given a set amount of time on the
clock and this time starts to tick away.
- The time on the clock is determined by the difficulty level chosen.
- Extra Time
- Aim of the game: Complete the puzzle before the time runs out.
- When you start the puzzle, you are given a certain amount of minutes
on the clock (Note: not enough time to complete the puzzle), and this
time starts to tick away.
- Each square the player fills in correctly earns extra time that is added
to the clock.
- Filling in multiple squares in quick succession will earn even more
time.
- Complete a row, column or mini-grid to earn extra time.
- Spend too much time thinking without filling in a correct square, and
the timer will run out, and the player will lose!
- Perfection
- Aim of the game: Complete the puzzle in the quickest time, keeping mistakes
and pencil marks to a minimum.
- A puzzle and timer is displayed, complete the puzzle as quickly as possible.
- Every misplaced number is highlighted, and adds a certain amount of
seconds to the final time taken.
- Every pencil mark used also adds a certain amount of seconds to the
final time.
- The automatic timer keeps check of the time taken.
- The fastest times are stored in a High-Score Table.
- 3 Strikes and You’re Out!
- Aim of the game: Complete the puzzle in the quickest time, without using
all 3 lives.
- The player is given 3 lives at the start of the puzzle. Every time
a mistake is made, the player loses a life.
- Once 2 lives have been used, the next mistake will mean the end
of the puzzle for the player.
2-Player Modes
- Free For All
- Aim of the game: 2 players play the same puzzle; the player who completes
the most squares correctly wins the game!
- Player 1 invites Player 2 to play a puzzle.
- Player 1 sets the criteria for the game that applies to both players.
- The puzzle is randomly selected and displayed to both players at the
same time.
- Each player will see the standard puzzle screen showing one puzzle.
- However, each player has their own cursor, and their own number selector
(differentiated by different colors).
- When the game starts, the players have to race around the grid, filling
in as many correct numbers as they can. The color of the number displayed
is determined by who inserted it. When a player inserts a correct number,
they gain possession of that square.
- Both players’ cursors can occupy the same square at the same time,
the player who inserts the correct number first wins the square.
- The aim of the game is to dominate the board with your color by inserting
the most numbers correctly thereby gaining the most squares once the puzzle
is complete.
- Play and Pass 1
- Aim of the game: 2 players play the same puzzle, the player who completes
the puzzle in the quickest time wins the game!
- Player 1 sets up the game. The puzzle is displayed, and a clock for
Player 1 starts to count up from zero.
- As soon as Player 1 has inserted a number into a square correctly, their
clock stops, and the clock for Player 2 starts.
- As soon as Player 2 has inserted a number into a square correctly, their
clock stops, and the clock for Player 1 starts again.
- The game continues with both players completing a square at a time,
until the puzzle is complete and correct.
- Each player has their own clock that keeps count of how long it took
them to complete their moves.
- The winner is the player who has completed their “half”
of the puzzle in the quickest time.
- Play and Pass 2
- Aim of the game: 2 players play 2 different puzzles, the player who completes
their puzzle in the quickest time wins the game!
- Player 1 sets up the game and determined time for each turn.
- The period of time is determined by the 2 players. Some players will
want to have a go every 10 seconds while some players will want to spend
minutes per turn.
- Player 1 now has the determined amount of time to complete as much of
the puzzle as they can.
- When the clock hits zero, the puzzle is frozen, and it is now Player
2’s turn.
- Player 2 is shown a different puzzle, and has the determined amount
of time to complete as much as they can.
- The players carry on taking turns, with each turn giving them the set
amount of time to complete their separate puzzles.
- During each player’s turn, the display shows how complete their
opponent’s puzzle is.
- The winner is the one to complete their puzzle in the quickest time.
